Bagged the missus tickets for Pondlife's farewell tour last night. Was texting a mate who buys n sells tickets to see if he could help me out after Sheffield & Manchester both sold out in minutes, but managed to cop for tickets for Liverpool. General sale today and my mate reckons I got in at the right time. Saw the tickets I bought for £48 on some ticket flogging site for over £100 only minutes after the gigs had sold out!

well, for starters brown can't really sing at all. his voice sounds great double [triple?]-tracked to within an inch of its life like on [say] the recorder version of 'i wanna be adored', but, yeah, live not so much.

That's true, but I don't listen to the Roses for that. Brown's got buckets full of what most singers don't have, he's fucking cool and he's got summat to say. There's a thousand bands out there who have much better singers but don't attract anything like the hero worship he gets.

Was at the Ally Pally gig in 89, the sound/acoustics were shocking & Brown was poor vocally. Top night though. Fools Gold at the end was a very special moment. I'm sure anyone that goes to the re-union will have a tingle.

I never saw them, but by reputation all of their 'big gigs' - Spike Island, Glasgow Green and so on - seem to have been notorious for having really, really shit sound. No idea why; maybe the sound man was someone's partially deaf kid brother and they didn't have the heart to fuck him off or summat.

Him out of Oasis, whatsisname, the older one, he said the sound at Spike Island was shite cos the wind was blowing it all over the place, but it didn't matter cos all them people were there. It was just a massive party. And that's what this'll be like. I hope.

I've been to a couple of gigs at Ally Pally, the sound is awful there innit? I suppose it wasn't built for gigs.

jesus there's some memories for me in this thread..

jumbo was the mutt's bits - i remember going to the merrion centre shop at every opportunity as a kid and developing a crush on the dark haired lass who used to work there, she might still but i left leeds 10 years ago. I've seen her at the odd gig i recent years and once got pissed enough to buy her a drink and start rambling at her. i think she had a chap though.

and the stone roses, i was lucky enough to see them at the poly in the summer of '89 and they were awesome that night - the vibe and playing was intense. i play the drums and was totally awe struck by reni who has to be the best drummer i've ever seen - he's not flash but has amazing instinct. it's like he was fully integrated into the rhythm section. genius.

i saw them at the colosseum/T&C a few years later and didn't enjoy it half as much.

I play drums a bit and I've gotta agree there, I haven't heard anyone better. Daybreak is ridiculous.

keith moon was the sort of drummer i really don't like - with him it's all about the drums being prominent, about showing off what you can do, it's about bombast, crash bang whallop, about competing with the rest of the band. it's much harder to mould your drums round the music and bring out the best in the songs, that requires craft and understanding.

yeah the bloke can drum and that was the style of the day, but it doesn't do 'owt for me.

I honestly reckon Reni's the best of the best. Better than Moon, better than Bonham, even better than him out of Bloc Party. If I could get on YouChoob at work I'd stick a vid of Daybreak up here (and, indeed, watch the one you put up!), but the man's unbelievable. He drums like an octopus.

With you on this. It's like all those cunts who reckon Yngwie Malmsteen is a better guitarist than, say, Johnny Marr, just cos he can play lots of notes dead fast.

It's about the tune, innit.
