Yeah, I noticed. It can't hurt to be nominated and I think making even the shortlist for this would be incredible. I suspect it will be nigh on impossible to win though because there's no way we can compete with the sheer weight of numbers that will vote for Football Weekly, The Football Ramble, etc. Still, nice thought.

If I had to pick one (thankfully I won't get that luxury!) then I'd want the fanzine award. That's cos it's the thing that takes most work, it's far more of a level playing field as a category, and retaining it would be an even greater achievement than winning it in the first place (think 1992-93).

To be honest, I'd just like the chance to be there to get shitfaced again, this time without worrying that I may miss the birth of a child.

As the TSB xmas party proved, we're all painfully, painfully shy. That, and you would discover that every other user on this forum is controlled by the same person...

What we were trying to articulate was our that we felt terribly guilty for not liking him much in 1996, when we were both young and naive. It's only now, some time further down the line, and with more life experience, that we can appreciate what he actually achieved.

As TFP will, um I dunno, testify, the interview with Wilko was a real eye-opener about the financial constraints Wilko was working under. So, while the game had undoubtedly moved on around him, his vision was unchanged. But it's only now I can fully appreciate it. He deserved better in 1996.

Not on the same level but that's basically how I feel about Grayson. I think he was the man for us and he was fucked off because Bates is an odious penny-pinching cuntbag. I hope he comes back when Warnock and Bates are gone in the next year or so.

Well, that's what boggled me. It sounds like Chubby and I are almost the same age. Now, maybe he was a faster developer than I, but I considered Wilko to the best manager in the world because, as the Leeds United manager, it had to be true by definition! None of his successors were ever granted the benefit of such wide-eyed naivety on my part but Wilko was the only manager I'd ever known so I don't think I even considered that he *could* be sacked. Even with all the discontent around the Wembley final, it simply didn't occur to me. I was desperately disappointed with the performance but I couldn't possibly hate him for it.

As for you, I can only imagine that it's a quirk of being born in a pretty small window: too young to have been embittered by the 80s wilderness years, and thus still be eternally grateful to HW; too old to be as unquestioningly supportive as I was? Even then, having had it always rankle with me that I didn't really fully appreciate the title win at the time, I was staggered listening to the pod! For shame, for shame!

Damn right. I trust the Tucker-esque bollocking you dished out had been edited out of the pod?

Am I misremembering it or did he say something to the effect that he didn't support Leeds until after we'd won the league and thus, had no real conception of Wilko pre early to mid-90s malaise. I was absolutely fucking gutted when Wilko was sacked and I disliked/hated pretty much every manager until Macca/Larry.

I obviously hate myself for ever thinking it, but let me explain.

I'm 28 now and didn't get properly into football until the 93/4 season. I have absolutely no memory of Leeds being outside the top division and only a vague memory of the title win. I certainly didn't celebrate it as I would have done a couple of years later. Without any real appreciation of what had gone before, all I saw was a mediocre team and my Scum supporting schoolmates smugly enjoying winning things. By the time the Coca Cola Cup final defeat had occurred I think it's fair to say that the majority of ER wanted to see the back of him. I was still only 12 so I had an excuse - most others didn't and I suppose I went along with them. In short, I blame those who should have known better for leading me astray.

That said, would we really have done any better with Wilko in charge? As I remember it George Graham did a really good job and stabilised us by buying cheap players that weren't necessarily from Sheffield. I still have a lot of fond memories of that side - Ribiero, Hasselbaink, Molenaar etc.

Well fucking hell its like you read my mind. I'm 28 too and started watching Leeds 93/94 when my Dad got me a child season ticket in the family stand. Wilko did a fantastic job but was right to get the boot when he did (If not earlier) not to completely ruin his name. I too have a twisted fondness of the George Graham era, that season when we scored 27 goals in 38 games - fucking hell did you savour every goal that season.

I'm 28 too, was taken to Elland Rd as a baby and then an infant. Fucking cursed right from the off.

I'm in this photo with my older brother and Wilko, if you fancy a laugh.

I'm 30 and vividly remember the League title season. I remember first going to Elland Road to see us play Scunthorpe in the Zenith Data Cup I think (stood in Lowfields) - either 89/90 or 90/91. I remember seeing Mel Sterland and what an absolute beast he was, and remember Chappy scoring 1 or 2. I was hooked. By the time I got the family stand ticket (free!!!) with my Dad in 93/94 season (seems we all started then) I loved it.

I even remember being at my Gran's house during the 90/91 season and the epic 5-4 defeat at Anfield to Liverpool (or was it ER? My memory sucks). The game sounded like the best thing ever - especially as we were the newly promoted team.

91/92 was great as a 10 yr old. I didn't go to any games but we were on telly a lot (Sheff Wed 6-1, amazing) and a few scum games. I particularly remember listening to the Sheff Utd 3-2 at end of the season; the rest of the family had gone on a day out and I refused as I wanted to listen (and I'm sure my Dad did too but he towed the line - weak man, weak). I was jumping around the house when the 3rd goal went in. Brilliant stuff.

It did all seem to go pear shaped when I started to go. I remember (and it was mentioned in the podcast previous to latest) that when Carlton Palmer signed. That was the beginning of the end. The 4-0 defeat to scum at home was the final nail in the coffin - even I had lost faith in Wilko by the time the CCC final came around (I cried at wembley that day, especially when Yorke smashed his goal in at the other end). It was clear things needed to change; we were stale, started selling a few good players and never really did bring in that much quality. Again as a few have said, it was refreshing to see Graham to start to shore up the defence, and yes, the attacking play was dire but at least we rarely conceded. I however wasn't sad to see him go. And the rest as they say is history.
