I've just filled in the first stage of my prediction league thing at work. I end up with our route to the final being Serbia / Uruguay / Brazil whereas Spain's, for example, is Portugal / Italy / Argentina.

Still don't really think we can get anywhere but fuck me, this is the best draw we'll ever get.

the draw is why i'm pretty sure why spain won't win it. far too many chances for them to screw up, even if they have as much as an 80% chance of winning each of their potential four post-group games [4-to-1 on being unusual in a two-horse race], the chance of them winning them all without screwing up once is pretty small.

i don't know about serbia. their defence looks like it could be better than ours - ivanoic, fresh out of the PFA team of the year, vidic, who's been a fixture in most recent PFA teams of the year, the left back plays for lazio and is apparently interesting both man citeh & real madrid... but... i'm not sure about other positions?

Just done mine, for some reason my first reg didn't work so I had to do it again - MW can you delete the one that doesn't have my username next to it?

Done.

We've got a very healthy 17 in the competition now, should make for a good month. Always find these tournament dream teams work better simply due to how rapid it is. No chance to lose interest like you do in the 10 month domestic league version.

If anybody else wants in they have half an hour.

I'm not exactly doing great either, I've decided its bad enough to sacrifice 9 points in order to make 4 transfers ahead of the 2nd round of games. I've also re-registered under another email address, and picked a 2nd squad which I bet will be outscoring my original by the end of the group stage despite missing the 1st round of games.

Ah, fuck. Just realised I accepted a lucky dip selection with the plan to sort it out at a later date. I presume I'm not doing too well?

no, you're quite poorly placed.

my team are no great shakes either, mind... it seems like there's some sort of mechanism for using 'sub's to replace players who've played in their game but not done terribly well? e.g. it looks like i could have brought de rossi [who scored] on for [say] fat frank, who did nowt... but i didn't read the rules properly [or indeed at all]... maybe i'll sort it out in time for the next round... and my great tip around slovak defenders vs NZ hardly worked out a treat... the useless git who i picked didn't even get on the pitch..

You can indeed do that TFP, I've been playing that system well.

My problem was that I did some late tinkering, and had half a mil spare. I used that half a mil to replace podolski with higuain, which was a bad mistake. Worse still, it turns out slovenia have 2 keepers called hananovic, and I had the wrong one, who happens to be 0.5m cheaper than the right one. So I subbed in Buffon who scored my 2 points. Without those 2 blunders, I'd be 20 points better off. And to add insult to injurt, I have 2 7.5m players who didn't play and don't look like doing either!

it's a bit shit that you can't see other players' teams. that's usually part of the fun.

Yeah, especially when transfers are limited or cost you points, could understand not being able to see teams until after the transfer deadlines but fully expected to be able to see them after that.

Sorry, what's this? You can transfer between games on an individual day. Is that what you're on about?

You have to explicitly make your team "public" I believe. It does have the benefit that it stops players "mirroring" their closest challenger, but I think this mainly a problem in PL games rather than tournaments.

Yes, you can replace players between 11pm and about midday the following day with other squad members. You lose points gained by the outgoing player and you can only sub in players who're yet to play. You can also change your captain and sacrifice the double points you've earn't if you think you can do better.

Only downside is that you can't sub out sent off players - I'm stuck with Tim "-1" Cahill and have to leave Iniesta on the bench.

My tactic so far has been to have lesser players from teams who play early, if they do especially well, they stay in otherwise the brazilians and spanish come into the side.

well, in any given round, if (A) you've got a player on the bench whose country has yet to play that round; and (B) one of the guys in your starting XI [on the roster of a country that has already played that round] was either not picked by his country or had a 'mare, then you can switch, er, (A) and (B) round provided you do it well in advance of (A)'s game being played [midnight the day before?] i guess it favours, if possible, putting your players who'll play relatively late in a round on the bench...

What?! What?! That's mental. I subbed my Brazilians for my Spaniards after FT last night as I knew that I'd be on a train until kick off today and didn't know if my 3G connection would work reliably. If that's cost me the points Maicon picked up I'll go ballistic...

Yes, it will have done, there's plenty of warnings about it asking you if you really want to do it, highlighting the exact points it'll cost you. Unless you did it before 11pm UK time, in which case it won't have let you do it and you were probably playing with your rnd 2 starting 11.
