Colin's Quotes

Deserves a thread all of its own. We need something that could rival the transfers thread!!

Good little intro piece from the man himself in the Indy to get things started

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/neil-warnock-i-havent-got-a-clue-what-we-can-achieve-but-lets-have-some-fun-7213913.html?

It is exciting to be back and it is even more so to be at a genuine, big club like Leeds United.

I've spoken to three or four clubs in the last 10 days and I've been really pleased with being wanted. Leeds was the one that I listened to a lot and I saw the fans' forums. They seemed to be united that they wanted me. I do feel that when you've got potentially 30,000 people it's a bloody fantastic place to be. I reckon Leeds are the fourth- or fifth-biggest club in the country.

I love it at my age. I have nothing to fear. If things go wrong, I will call it a day. As long as I enjoy it, I will see how it goes between now and the end of the season. My contract is until the end of next season, but I've spoken to Ken Bates, the Leeds chairman, and if we know it's not working – I'm not into contracts now, I was when I'm younger – we'll go our own way. I've always got on all right with the chairman. I know how he runs his clubs, he gets them organised. I know they've had lot of protests, but I'm saying to fans: "We've got 14 games to go, put everything to bed and let's have some fun."

I honestly haven't got a clue what we can achieve. If you'd seen the first half against Doncaster on Saturday, you'd have said, "Let's avoid relegation." If you saw the second, you'd say, "Let's go for it." We've got some good players, and the crowd is an extra player.

I regretted not putting myself on the bench after 10 minutes of the game. I said that to Mick Jones. I went down at half-time and changed three or four things and that really helped us. They're a very keen set of lads, they all want to do their best. That's great for me.

Yesterday was a warm-down and a chat so we could get on with it the next day. I had a word with the lads I didn't see. It's a clean slate. With me leaving QPR there were one or two comments about players who had been left out. It reminded me so I said to the players here, "No rude comments in the press about the past manager ... or me!"

I first spoke to Leeds 10 days ago. They asked me my situation. I didn't know what I was going to do. Over 10 days, I had two interviews with other clubs and another close one before then. Then everything at Leeds happened in 24 hours last week. I spoke to Wolves on Wednesday, I don't think they wanted to make a quick decision. I spoke to Ken on Thursday. He said, "Come over and I'll tell you about the club, you can start on Sunday and meet them on Monday."

I went back and thought that would be a waste of a game and I wanted to make sure we got three points against Doncaster, which we did – even if it didn't look possible at 2-0 down. It wasn't a bad first team-talk! They responded to the changes. Neil Redfearn was already shouting at them when I went in. I let him do that. I wanted to be the good cop! It was fantastic when the third goal went in at the end, it was hairs on the back of your neck time. The lads know it will give them belief, that has probably been missing. We will get better for next week. We will be more organised after a week's training, and then another week training gives us a great chance to get sorted out.

I would imagine a betting man would say the play-offs would be difficult. We have to win every game. If we lose a couple it's beyond us. But I've been in to the academy and you've never seen anything like it. It's the biggest academy complex at a club I've been at, by a mile. It's "top of the Premier League" standard.

I tell you what: it feels good to be back!

http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-united/snodgrass_will_be_given_broader_canvas_for_his_creativity_1_4264726

NEIL WARNOCK plans to build his Leeds United side around Robert Snodgrass.

The Scottish international, with 12 goals to his name and a tally of assists already in double figures, has been United’s outstanding player of the season.

But Warnock believes United can get even more out of Snodgrass by handing the 24-year-old the free attacking role that he filled in the second half against Doncaster on Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to the Yorkshire Post yesterday in his new office at Thorp Arch, Warnock said: “When you play against good teams, they put two men on Robert Snodgrass.

“I would certainly do that if in charge of an opposing team against Leeds. You can mark him out of the game on the wing.

“The difference with the role I asked him to play in the second half is you can’t mark him.

“The second goal, when he crossed from wide on the left (for Adam Clayton to score), proved that. Doncaster couldn’t pick him up in time.

“Snodgrass is a player who can do anything. He creates goals, he scores goals and he gives defenders a hard time. I want him on the ball as much as anyone.

“I remember his performance against QPR (last Christmas when Leeds beat Warnock’s side 2-0) was outstanding. That is how I see him.

“What I also want to see is a situation where three out of the front four know they can interchange. That is what I love to see. I will be looking for a lot more of that in the coming weeks.”

Warnock visited the United dressing room ahead of kick-off against Rovers but then planned to leave team matters to caretaker manager Neil Redfearn.

That plan had to be shelved, however, as a poor Leeds display in the opening 45 minutes left Warnock knowing changes had to be made.

He said: “It was really frustrating being in the stands. After 10 minutes, I was really wishing I had put my name down on the sheet to be able to be in the dugout as there was a space on it.

“The little things were what I was desperate to change, maybe the ones the punters don’t notice.

“For example, in the first half we defended a corner and (winger Andros) Townsend was inside our six-yard box. This meant we had one lad, (Ross) McCormack, up front with everyone else back.

“I got hold of Townsend at half-time and said, ‘Who told you to go there on corners? I want you on the halfway line on one side and McCormack on the other’. That way the opposition have to bring three back, which is what happened.

“When we did change things, I thought it worked a lot better. And that’s without the chance to show the lads a few things on the training ground. I expect us to be better at Portsmouth (next Saturday) and a lot better the week after against Southampton. We are going to be working hard over the next couple of weeks.”

Along with handing Snodgrass a role similar to the one Adel Taarabt proved so devastating in as QPR romped to the Championship title last term, Warnock also envisages ditching the 4-4-2 formation United have employed in all but a handful of games this season.

The new Leeds chief said: “The fans will have to trust me with formations as I am not convinced we can play 4-4-2 with the players we have got and expect to win games.

“The main thing I can tell the fans is they can come to games knowing the players wearing the Leeds shirt will be willing to run through brick walls for 90 minutes.

“There won’t be anyone putting a Leeds shirt on giving less than 100 per cent for 90 minutes under me, I can promise everyone that.”

interesting [imo] that he says "I am not convinced we can play 4-4-2 with the players we have got and expect to win games".

i'm not really sure what this means. what's the type of player that you need to play 4-4-2 that you don't need for other formations? i suppose i might be tempted to say wide midfielders who can get up and down the pitch a lot, put in a real shift at both ends of the pitch? that and preferably attacking full backs? a balanced front two?

i must say that i miss the beautiful balance we had with max & snodgrass in the team together in a 4-2-3-1, but obviously there's no gradel lookalike in the squad we have left.

Ain't it a bit risky building a side around our most saleable asset? Shouldn't we be building it around someone shit like Nunez?

I would guess that he means our central midfield is shit, so we need an extra body in there?

yeah, maybe... e.g. maybe he thinks 'browny' can do a job if he has two pairs of young legs [down, danny] in close vicinity...

well, snoddy's contract runs to the end of next season. maybe that's how long warnock sees himself staying realistically, what's left of this season & all of next. he may have had assurances [arf] from kenneth that snodgrass's contract will be run down to the end if that's what the manager wants.

I appreciate that I ought to give Colin a fair crack of the whip, but I just haven't been able to listen to / watch any of his interviews yet. Too uncomfortable. As soon as that one came up on t'Youtube with him wearing a Leeds top I had to switch it off.

I'll give it a month or two I think.

Win the games and shut thi' gob Neil, that's my advice.

He said in his interview on LUTV that he hadn't discussed next season at all, which is a bit of a blow as I'd hoped he'd have got some assurances. I recon the only thing we can be sure of is that he'll walk out if the summer doesn't go to plan, and pray that Bates is keen to ensure that doesn't happen (knowing full well that he'll take the flack for it).

yeah, that sounds eminently plausible.

leslie silver asked wilko to draw up a 10-year plan.

20 years on kenneth wants colin to draw up a 3-month [no transfers] one.

not sure that this represents progress .

Sound advice.

Mid-table obscurity beckons, followed by a "nearly" season next year and then exeunt Colin methinks.
