Re this Pearce bloke from Portsmouth, generally regarded as the guy we'll announce tomorrow - this is stolen from Waccoe, but originally on a Portsmouth forum and suggesting inside knowledge of the deal:

"The deal was agreed one month ago for Pearce. He agreed terms with Leeds 2 weeks ago, He signs a contract with Leeds tomorrow 1st May, The fee will be around £260,000, Leeds have agreed to release the funds in full on the 1ST May and have agreed to pay Pearce's last 2 months deferred wages owing to him and also Portsmouth agent fee taking the sum total to around £380,000. Reason why cheap deal and announced tomorrow is to take him off wage books and so they don't have to pay Bournemouth Fc for any add ons that was agreed when he signed for Portsmouth at the start of last season and was also reason he did not play on Saturday and also helps to trim running cost, other clubs were interested in signing him but were not willing to release the funds in total tomorrow or pay Portsmouth agent fee... I think that when, and not if, we see Chuck and Luke Varney go the same way as Jason Pearce (through the exit gates) we will not be surprised, right?

These two are almost certain to leave Fratton this summer, I know which one I would be much happier to see leave and would not miss half as much though!

Although seeing both leave to join Pearce at Leeds would be a surprise really...

Well, according to reports in The Yorkshire Evening Post, both moving to Elland Road is something that could well happen?

It is very much 'needs must' at the moment so if one, or both, do end up going off to Leeds then I guess we have to take a 'so be it' approach really, and the sooner this happens really the better...

The next player that is 'likely' to move on though is believed to be Joel Ward.

'5 or 6 clubs' are interested in signing the Pompey utility man so he is not short of options, lets just hope - again as much as he is one I would love us to keep - that we can get a bidding war going and get the best possible price for him, and get this done sooner rather than later.

Our continued problem is that with the need for money so great the chances are we will not get anything like true valuations on players, especially if the buying clubs agree to pay the entire transfer fee up front...

We'er supposed to be after Ward n all aren't we??

Its open season on Pompey like it was when we went down. Easy rumours, lazy journalism, everybody will be connected to their best players.

Though, they are cheap............. Ken, Ken............................! :bigsmurf:

yeah, i'm a big fan of all the rumours about kanu's real age, but i can't believe that he's pushing 50 as is populary suggested.

from what i can gather he played his best football in the mid 90s.

now, all [outfield] players play their best football at some point in their 20s, right?

you get a few very exceptional cases, e.g. the odd 'pace merchant' who gets crocked or has, ahem, lifestyle issues at a young age [e.g. lee sharpe, maybe even michael owen] might peak at 19, the odd 'crafty' playmaker type like, uh, teddy sheringham or kenny dalglish or someone might peak at 30, 31, but nearly always players peak in their 20s.

so given that kanu played his best football in the mid 90s, that to me puts him likely having been born at some point between the mid 70s [his official age, i.e. now coming to the end of his mid 30s] and the mid 60s [i.e. now coming to the end of his mid 40s]... Imo the 'mid 60s' theory doesn't ring true - they had half decent tv coverage of the 1990 african nations tournament, kanu absolutely didn't get on the pitch for nigeria during it, which to me pretty much rules out the notion that he was born in the mid 60s... a player as as talented as him would almost certainly have been 'discovered' and called up by then if he was in his mid 20s.

rumours do persist that he was in or around the squad in 1990 [when his official age would have been 13 or 14] but if so i reckon that he'd have been a kid in his teens. all told i reckon that the evidence points to him perhaps being, er, pushing 40 but no more than that.

i'd love us to sign the cunt.

David James wrote this about Kanu when they played together at Pompey a few years ago -

Kanu never trained. He never even walked up a flight of stairs. We only had one flight of stairs at Portsmouth's training ground, but Kanu would always wait for the lift. He was practically incapacitated, but on the field he could do amazing things. One match, he came on, ran three-quarters of the length of the pitch, scored - and then travelled home in a wheelchair.

There's a good article about Nigerian footballers in The Guardian here which suggests that he was 42 back in 2010, which would make him 44 this year I guess.

His sub appearance against us at Elland road was certainly something to behold. He hobbled on and never left the centre circle. Pompey would have been better off with 10 men. Quite literally my Grandmother could have done better.
