At the time I'd have opted for the school option over the funeral, but in the years after I'd have ended up regretting it. Then again, you have regrets either way and I reckon it's better that they're her regrets rather than something she constantly holds against you.

On the old coffin bearer thing, I wouldn't worry. I did it at my grandad's funeral and despite him being a big bloke it wasn't too difficult. The undertakers also walked alongside in case one of us fucked it up.

Let her go to the last day of school. Last day is a real experience it'd be a shame for her to miss one of the best things about secondary school.

I'd imagine its been a bit of a shit time of late at home and GCSE year is stressful enough. Plus it really isn't the job of a 16 year old to provide moral support to their parents... she'll have to do that plenty at a later date. Let her be a kid.

Medium daughter got her nose pierced on Friday.

At some point Saturday she's just standing there, then suddenly twats her nose and then shrieks in agony.

Me, "Er, what happened there then?"

"I thought it was a fly"

Comedy gold. Pissed meself.

Erm, what is a lido? I assumed it was slang for lidl. Great place to hang out.

Ah right, cheers. I can imagine the one is Ilkley is open, like, 2 days a year when there isn't a monsoon wind?

ah, ok. there's one near me in Tooting, south london, a big 100-yard beast of a pool. unbearably cold and unpleasant for about 355 days a year & has daft queues round the block on hot weekend/bank hol days.

The one in Lewes is the oldest public pool in the country and a splendid place too. It's spring-fed and even in August after a decent summer it's bloody freezing (well, that's how it feels to a soft shite like me). Utterly rammed this weekend, though.

So we're getting our little boy christened on 1st July. Wasn't my choice, seems like a whole load of expense and hassle to be ordained into a religion we have no belief in, but the mrs was keen, so here we are. Vicar came round tonight to sort all the bits and that. Lovely woman, like, but fuck me if that was one of the longest hours of my life.

Any other abject hypocrites on here or am I the only one?

we have a choice - the school nearest us is possibly the best in york but a c of e school. the other school whose catchment we are in is one of the worst in york. my kids are 9 and 8 so secondary school is on the horizon, so about a year or so ago we started doing the family service once a month. the vicar has since invited me to the pub and our two were finally christened 4 months ago. to be fair he's a decent bloke and the services are only 40 minute long and kid friendly. as an atheist i square the circle by supporting the churches' christian values like trying not to hit them or stealing their savings.

i think it's good to learn to make compromises in this shitty world at an early age. i've never been a principled or righteous type.

Yeah, we christened our Daughter, never got round to it with the boy, glad we didn't as it was a very hypocritical hour I won't get back, we squared it by picking 3 god parents who hadn't been christened either, expected them to check and for that to be an issue, but fuck it, all we really did is say to some close friend "if owt happened to us, we'd trust you to guide our kids". The same people call themselves god parents to the boy too.

Similar story for us to Quiffy re local schools too, and we'll be taking the same route. My daughter seems to take comfort in all that shit too, so maybe not so hypocritical after all - if she wants to believe it, she's welcome to, just so long as she never tried to force it on us.

Principles are a tricky fuck right enough. I've mellowed a bit in my old age but I did tell the sister-in-law to get fucked when she asked us to become Godparents some years ago. Things have never quite been sorted since then.

But hey, y'know, the way I look at it is that if you teach your kids that it's OK for them to listen to lying deluded bastards, you don't really have a great deal of moral authority thereafter.

Despite my well known atheist tendencies I was asked by my step brother to be godfather to his daughter. She was subjected to whatever it is the catholics do to their children these days and at the part where I had to repeat after the priest in renouncing the devil I simply made the noises 'nur-nur-nur-nur-nur' instead of saying the words. Like a child. Then we all went to the pub and had a substandard buffet.

The whole "do you renounce the devil" thing is the best bit. Reminds me of the end of The Godfather, easily my favourite movie scenes of all time.
