AFTER THE ACCOUNTS: THE FOG IN LUFC’S FINANCES

The most interesting part of Leeds United’s 2010/11 financial returns, which have become available today, fall after the end of the accounting period. The filings take the assorted companies that make up Leeds City Holdings to the end of June 2011, but at the bottom of the very last page, is this:

‘Post Balance Sheet Events’: Leeds United Football Club Limited entered into an agreement whereby it sold season tickets for both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 season for a sum of £5,000,000 after the year end.

This, it seems, it the £5m facility that was referred to in the official sites reporting of the account headlines: “After the year end we entered into an agreement for a £5,000,000 facility to part fund the East Stand Development.”

What Ken Said – 15.06.11 – Leeds United Calypso

‘Mr Chairman’ tells Ben Fry a lot of what he told Thom Kirwin in recent weeks. Scotland’s great, the Japanese superstar who can’t speak English, players want too much money, blah blah blah… Ken also looks ahead to the Carling Cup draw and fixtures coming out and tells Sky we don’t want to be on TV. Ex-academy lad Elliot Kebbie (who’s training with Barcelona) gets a mention before we hear about how Barbados Bill’s East Stand development will make Elland Road the best stadium in England… seriously. On that subject, there is another warning that you sickpots who want money spending on the team instead of a hotel are stupid. Finally, Ken’s delighted we have sold 828 less season tickets than last season.Continue Reading

What Ken Said – 13.04.11 – One Is Not Amused

Taken from Yorkshire Radio’s interview with Leeds United chairman Ken Bates today… ‘Mr Chairman’ gives a damning assessment of our performance at Derby last night. He is equally as damning about the Millwall fans’ antics on Saturday. He looks ahead to more six-pointers against Watford and Reading, who apparently are below us (if only!). TicketContinue Reading

Podcast #27: International Rescue

Thanks to the international break there’s only one dreadful game to cover from the last fortnight. With a week-and-a-half having elapsed since the Whites were cut down to size by a poor Blades side, the edge has been taken off the negative feelings that followed a bad day out a Bramall Lane. Doyler, Lowry and McCartney are all in the firing line for various reasons, with Barry Bannan the Bananaman offering the fortnight’s only real high point.Continue Reading

What Ken Said – 23.03.11 – Better Late Than Never

em>Firstly, apologies for this being almost a week late. It does mean there should be two portions of What Ken Said for you to devour in just two days, with Ken’s next big interview scheduled for tomorrow. The below interview was done on Yorkshire Radio with Leeds United chairman Ken Bates last Wednesday, March 23.

‘Mr Chairman’ speaks to Thom Kirwin in the absence of Ben Fry. He gives some forthright views on the defeat to Sheffield United, our eight-match run-in which he hopes will end in a late surge for automatic promotion and transfers (which is now totally out of date but nonetheless interesting considering what happened the day after). There’s also more on TV games costing the club a fortune, international call-ups, the legendary Max Gradel and the East Stand development. Enjoy… Continue Reading

East Stand Development: In Pictures

Following FaxMan’s update on [What Ken Said about the East Stand development](http://www.thesquareball.net/what-ken-said/2011/03/22/east-stand-special/), The Square Ball checked the Leeds Council website to see if we could find any more information about just what works are being done to the ‘magnificent, new’ (circa 1993) East Stand. Lo and behold, [a whole new batch of images were uploaded just this last Monday](http://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=documents&keyVal=KBNOP7JB0FZ00), and so we now present the most useful of them for your perusal.Continue Reading

What Ken Said – East Stand Special

Today saw a rather dramatic picture posted on the official Leeds United website of the East Stand Upper at Elland Road with a good few thousand seats missing. For any fan who doesn’t listen to Yorkshire Radio 24 hours a day or religiously watch LUTV’s daily ‘We Are Leeds’ programme, you may be wondering whatContinue Reading

What Ken Said – 16.03.11 – Bucking Bronchitis

‘Mr Chairman’ is suffering from bronchitis this week , which means he can’t talk to anyone who’ll ask him difficult questions. Luckily, Ben Fry is still available. He explains why he missed the Select Committee hearing in Burnley and reveals what a splendid job Shaun Harvey did filling in, although he isn’t sure what Shaun actually said. There’s a blast for the boys after we failed to beat Ipswich but it’s OK because he doesn’t think Norwich are any good either. He shows some love for our parent club Aston Villa and looks forward to the Sheffield United match before revealing there’s about to be a big hole blown into the side of the East Stand. Even worse, there’s a cheeky fan trying to buy a season ticket. Finally, he pays tribute Don Revie, who managed the club when Ken preferred concrete to football…Continue Reading

What Ken Said – 09.03.11 – Beware Burnley

‘Mr Chairman’ is in positive mood after our historic midweek win over Preston last night. He shows Billy Paynter some manlove and gives his view on our chances of promotion. After wiping the cobwebs off the warchest to sign Barry Bannan, he reveals we’re hoping to land ‘one or two’ more players before the loan window deadline on March 24. There’s another budget-busting crowd expected for Ipswich on Saturday and free cocktails and canapes for fans… only the posh ones though. He has his (potentially libellous) say on Sepp Blatter’s presidential campaign at FIFA and prepares for his big day in Burnley – in front of the Parliamentary Select Committee Inquiry on Football Governance.Continue Reading
