Forgotten Champions

This post was actually conceived while watching the replay of our FA Cup tie with Arsenal the other week. With Issue 7 of The Square Ball and it’s excellent interview with Howard Wilkinson hitting the streets of Beeston this weekend, now seems the appropriate time to splurge it onto the internet.

You see, there’s something that has been niggling away at me for some time now without my being able to put a finger on it. It was just as the familiar ode to Dominic Matteo’s goal-scoring exploits in the San Siro began to fill the air and it went like this: we don’t half sing about some odd stuff at times. What’s Wrong With Football: Tom Hark

The first in an occasional series detailing things that are just plain wrong with the modern game. We start with Tom Hark.

Not a Preston North End footballer from the 1950s, but The Piranhas’ infectious ska hit from 1980. For infectious read ‘herpes’.

The song has long been the basis for many a terrace chant due to its childish, repetitive, simplistic nature. It works well. But at some point in the last few years, somebody in control of a PA system at a football ground thought that the raw, primeval passion of the crowd celebrating a goal would be enhanced by playing the recording of this irritating ditty to make the thrill all the greater.Continue Reading

Glynn Snodin Interview

In the early stages of the 2009-2010 promotion campaign, The Square Ball interviewed United’s affable, Leeds-saluting assistant manager, Glynn Snodin for issue 4 of the magazine that season. We chatted at some length about many Leeds United topics: the salute, Howard, Billy and the team’s promotion credentials. On this final topic, it’s worth noting that the interview took place on Thursday 22nd October 2009, symbolically sandwiched between clashes against our two biggest rivals in League One; it was preceded by our last minute win in the televised Monday night game at home to Norwich, who finished top that season, and was followed by our losing trip to Millwall, who finished right behind us in the table. Here, you can read the article in full, as published in the magazine.Continue Reading

Falling In And Out Of Love With Leeds – Part 2

Wise’s team began to string wins together and an improbable, impossible promotion was on the cards. Another sucker punch was lurking though, as Gus Poyet defected to Spurs, followed back to the capital only months later by Dennis Wise himself. Bizarrely though, Wise went back to London so he could work for Newcastle United. Fans desperately hoped that this would not result in a loss of momentum, and unemployed but altogether more palatable Gary McAllister took the hot seat. Continue Reading

Falling In And Out Of Love With Leeds – Part 1

It’s been easy to fall out of love with Leeds United. They have given us enough reasons.

I guess it all started when Woody was sold to Newcastle, contrary to the club’s public line about keeping the crown jewels. We can only presume at boardroom level that Woody was seen as more of a Ratner’s necklace than priceless ornament.Continue Reading

Round Up of Arsenal Coverage

Leeds will play more important games this season – starting on Saturday against Portsmouth – but it’s unlikely that they will play one bigger, in terms of sheer scale and attention, than they played with Arsenal at Elland Road last night. Twenty-four hours on from kick off – and twenty-two hours since defeat – there is plenty of coverage to reflect on.Continue Reading

About Season Ticket Prices

We talked about Leeds United’s season ticket [renewal prices]( http://i53.tinypic.com/1zbgejd.jpg) at some length on the most recent [Square Ball podcast]( http://www.thesquareball.net/podcast/2011/01/08/david-webb-is-a-cretin/), but time constraints meant we couldn’t cover every implication of the increases. One aspect that I would have liked to include is the way that football pricing has created a discord between what represents a fair deal for football fans, and ‘good business’ for the club.Continue Reading

Endorsing The Beaten Generation’s Back-to-Front Inside-Out Upside-Down United

Several times over the last twelve months I have referred back to The Beaten Generation’s [New Year's Revolution](http://www.thebeatengeneration.co.uk/tbg/index.php/2010/01/our-new-years-revolution/) article, as a reminder of why I’m involved in things like [The Square Ball](http://www.thesquareball.net) and as an inspiration to keep me going:Continue Reading
