Emily Pilbeam is a Leeds based DJ and, as host of BBC Music Introducing in West Yorkshire, is head scout and first team coach combined for new music in the city. You can listen to Emily’s show on Radio Leeds every Saturday from 8-10pm or whenever you like on the BBC Sounds app, and because football and music just make sense together, read her selections here in TSB.

Three tracks

Lois – Strange Men

I have unfortunately become obsessed with Love Island over the past six weeks, and this tune from Lois sounds perfect for that bit where one of the girls finally sticks up for themselves and decides to sack off the toxic man in her life. Tbh that’s not really happening in Love Island right now, so maybe the huns in the villa should put this on and get some confidence back! Strange Men is a masterclass in how to write a slick pop tune without blindly copying the generic pop formula that’s around at the minute. Enjoy! (itsloismusic.com)

Polevaulter – Content

Brutal noise and industrial beats make up the latest from Polevaulter. I’m a real sucker for aggressive guitars, drums and vocals, so of course I’ve been championing Polevaulter for quite some time. They’ve always been ace but their latest EP has me questioning even more why more people aren’t raving about them! (polevaulter.bandcamp.com)

Elanor Moss – Catholic

Elanor Moss has been on our radar as a talented singer-songwriter for a while now, and the release of her EP Catholic has only proved us right in our thoughts. If you like Angel Olsen or Mitski, Elanor Moss is going to be your new favourite. I’ve been belting out the heartbreakingly relatable lyrics in Catholic for weeks. (elanormoss.com)

Three gigs

Loyle Carner, Belgrave Music Hall, Saturday 25th March

Loyle Carner playing an intimate show at the Belgrave? What’s not to love? I’m pretty sure this sold out immediately but I had to shout about this! Belgrave Music Hall is celebrating their 10th Birthday by putting on some really special shows all year. Friendly Fires kicked it all off last month, Loyle Carner continues it, as does Arlo Parks and I’m sure there are loads more to announce. Keep an eye on their socials. (loylecarner.com)

Prospa, O2 Academy, Saturday 25th March

This is a HUGE show for dance duo Prospa! Formed in Leeds back when Harvey and Gosha were both here for uni, they have done some mad things since like playing Creamfields and the Amsterdam Dance Event for BBC Introducing. This will feel like a homecoming for the boys, supported by our faves Dainty! (soundcloud.com/prospauk)

Bug Teeth, Hyde Park Book Club, Wednesday 29th March

I saw Bug Teeth support English Teacher at Hebden Bridge Trades Club and was completely blown away. It was an out of this world, magical experience. I am so excited to see them again, you should see them too! (bugteeth.bandcamp.com)

Spotlight

My highlight of the month has to be Oliver Pinder in session on Introducing. It has been a long, long time since I’ve been able to sit and watch an artist perform live for us, cos Covid ‘n’ that, and FINALLY we’ve had them back in our studios! I’ve known and supported Oliver for a long time. He’s had a bit of a hiatus, so to have him performing new music live was a really special treat for me. He smashed it too! (oliverpinder.co.uk)

A song for… Georginio Rutter

Haze Da Martian ft Quade Poundsign – Spenny. I mean, does this need much explaining? I think the title says it all for our record signing. We love Haze Da Martian on Introducing! Spenny is a slick number from Haze that will be in your head for WEEKS, and namechecks Fabian Delph. Check out his EP Son of Shaun, out now. (ffm.to/hdm-sos)
