Emily Pilbeam is a Leeds based DJ and, as host of BBC Music Introducing in Leeds & Sheffield, is head scout and first team coach combined for new music in the city. You can listen to Emily’s show on Radio Leeds every Thursday from 8-10pm or whenever you like on the BBC Sounds app, and because football and music just make sense together, read her selections here in TSB.

Three Tracks

Ruby Duff — Undressed

Art-pop artist Ruby Duff has dropped yet another banger. Ruby Duff’s music is dramatic and bold and everything that pop should be — adventurous. Her voice as well is STUNNING. Excited to hear more from Ruby’s second EP which is due for release over summer.

Slow Cooked — Mice In Jeans

My new favourite artist in the Introducing uploader, without a doubt. Slow Cooked is the alias of experimental cellist Louie Barby from Huddersfield. ‘Mice In Jeans’ is the first track I’ve heard from Slow Cooked and I am hooked on it. It really pushes the boundaries. If you like English Teacher, Baxter Dury or Fat White Family I reckon you’ll like Slow Cooked.

Cowtown — Thru Being Zuul

Cowtown are BACK baby! Cowtown are a band from Leeds I have loved for years. They are always, always, always the best band to see live. They are so fun, so energetic and just so class. This new one from them is Cowtown on top form and I can’t wait to see what’s next from them.

Three Gigs

Morgan Harper-Jones — Hyde Park Book Club, Monday 8th April

Morgan Harper-Jones is an alt-indie artist from Rochdale. I’ve played Morgan Harper-Jones on 6 Music a couple of times and always been transfixed by them… their lyrics, their vocal range, all of it. Their debut album Up To The Glass is out now and well worth a listen.

Porij — The Wardrobe, Friday 19th April

If you are looking for a bit of fun on a Friday night then look no further! Manchester electronic/indie band Porij are stopping off at The Wardrobe and honestly, if you don’t have a good time watching them live, I’ll pay back the ticket price. They’re so great.

Gold Sounds Festival — Brudenell Social Club, Saturday 27th April

Returning and not to be missed, Gold Sounds is guaranteed to be a great day out for many reasons. First off, who doesn’t want to spend the whole day at Brudenell Social Club? Cheap pints and delicious pies, yes please! Secondly, the line-up is stacked with the best up and coming alternative artists! This year it’s headlined by bdrmm and featuring Hooton Tennis Club and many more. What more do you want?!

Highlight

I popped over the Pennines a lot last month, potentially too much for my liking, but I had a bloody FAB time at the 6 Music Festival. I DJ’d on the Friday night as part of the Indie Forever club night, but the real highlight was seeing The Smile. The Smile are an alternative rock band made up of Radiohead members and Tom Skinner. It was a pretty unbelievable set, and seeing Thom Yorke in the flesh felt surreal. ⬢
