This is the first issue of TSB’s 33rd season, and while thankfully our Premier League status didn’t change last season, a lot of other things are going to be different in 2022/23.

One thing that isn’t changing is that, as always since 1989, The Square Ball magazine will be on sale outside Elland Road, starting with the first match, against Wolves on Saturday 6th August 2022. Just look out for our windswept but friendly sellers by the Lowfields tunnel, Billy’s Statue, the Kop gates, and anywhere else someone is holding a fanzine in the air, until about fifteen minutes before kick-off.

Getting a copy delivered to your home is still a very good idea, as it will arrive free of beer stains and torn corners, unless your postie is having a bad morning. Details on how to support us by subscribing can be found here.

As always our now nine times-nominated and two-times FSF Award winning fanzine (plus one for the podcast) includes lots of pages of articles and artwork about what used to be the pain but now is the glory which still involves pain of being a Leeds United supporter, for more than 100 long, long years.

Issue one is full of nervous optimism to start the season:

  • An interview with Neil Kilkenny, telling Rob Conlon he never believed in home advantage until he played at Elland Road
  • TSB writers and readers reliving the best (and worst) opening days
  • Results of our pre-season TSB+ survey, about hopes for the new campaign
  • This issue’s views on the new kids, the young kids, the nearly-new coach, and all the stress of loving our favourite team
  • The Diary, Heroes & Villains, all the usual Leeds madness
  • A photo of Rasmus Kristensen with hair

Free to read from this issue is part of our look back to season openers gone by, as Andy P relives what felt, for a moment, like a fresh start for Howard Wilkinson. Even if he did have Ian Rush up front. Click here to read that for free.

We also have an interview with Leeds band Treeboy & Arc that you can read for free here.

The best way to buy The Square Ball this season is to subscribe and get every issue delivered to your home.

That way we know how many to print, and we have the money up front to pay the printer. We’ll post anywhere in the world and you won’t miss an issue.
